In recent years\, numerous large-scale seawater desalination plants have been built in wate r-scarce countries to augment available water resources and construction o f new desalination plants is expected to increase significantly in the nea r future. Despite the major advancements in reverse osmosis desalination t echnology\, the production of freshwater by seawater desalination is still more energy-intensive than conventional technologies for the treatment of freshwater sources.  Furthermore\, there are concerns about the environme ntal impacts of desalination and uncertainty about the potential effects o n the marine environment. \n\nThis presentation will review the energy eff iciency\, the state of the technology and the environmental challenges of seawater desalination. A discussion will be presented on the possible redu ctions in energy demand by state-of-the art seawater desalination technolo gies\; the potential role of advanced materials and innovative technologie s in improving energy use\, reliability\, and environmental impact of seaw ater desalination\; and the sustainability of desalination as a technologi cal solution to global water shortages.                  \n\nRead more abo ut Dr. Elimelech\n\nCo-hosted by:\n\n\n \n Saifur Rahaman (Assistant Profess or\, Department of Building\, Civil & Environmental Engineering (BCEE)\, C oncordia University)\n \n \n Subhasis Ghoshal\, Associate Professor\, Departm ent of Civil Engineering\, Â鶹ɫÇ鯬 & Director of the Trottier In stitute for Sustainability in Engineering and Design (TISED)\, Â鶹ɫÇ鯬 Univ ersity\n \n \n Nathalie Tufenjki\, Associate Professor\, Department of Chemic al Engineering\, Â鶹ɫÇ鯬 & Associate Director\, Brace Centre for Water Resources Management\, Â鶹ɫÇ鯬\n \n\n DTSTART:20161026T173000Z DTEND:20161026T190000Z LOCATION:Room EV- 2.260\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3G 2W1\, EV Building\, Conc ordia University\, 1515 Sainte Catherine Ouest SUMMARY:The global challenge for water supply: is seawater desalination a s ustainable solution?
