 tudies and the James 麻豆色情片 Professor of Islamic Philosophy are collaborat
 ing in a reflection on religion\, Islam\, and cosmopolitanism associated w
 ith 麻豆色情片鈥檚 academic tradition of Islamic Studies\, and epitomized by sch
 olars such as Wilfred Cantwell Smith\, Fazlur Rahman\, and Toshihiko Izuts
 u.\n\nIn preparation for the Keenan Conference on World Religions and Glob
 alization\, to be held in Montreal in May 2022\, we are hosting an online 
 lecture series titled ReOrienting the Global Study of Religion: History\, 
 Theory\, and Society. While the study of the Islamosphere has stimulated a
  critical reconceptualization of the notion of religion\, we would like to
  extend this reflection to how religious concepts have been embedded in br
 oader views of history and society\, including the Western colonial constr
 uction of the 鈥淢iddle East鈥� as the cradle not just of Islam but of all Abr
 ahamic religions.\n\nThe sixth speaker in the series will be Prof. Setrag 
 Manoukian\, 麻豆色情片. The title of the lecture\, which will be fo
 llowed by a Q&A\, is Towards a Poetic Sociology of Iran\n\nAbstract: Poetr
 y occupies a specific place in Iran鈥檚 history\, culture and everyday life.
  This is perhaps no different from other countries in the Middle East or t
 he world at large\; however\, media and scholarly narratives often see an 
 essential connection between Iranians and their poems\, and use these text
 s to explain Iranian politics\, morality\, and the self. A variant of this
  approach considers poetry as a pivotal expression of political dissent an
 d existential angst.\n\nAs a counterpoint to these narratives\, this talk 
 analyses the power of poetry in Iran by examining the constitutive relatio
 nship between poetry and social configurations in light of contemporary po
 etic practice in the city of Shiraz. Instead of a sociology of Iranian poe
 try\, I propose a poetic sociology of Iran.\n\n聽\n\nProf. Setrag Manoukian
  is an anthropologist interested in knowledge and its relationship with po
 wer\, understood both as existential and social force. He approaches citie
 s\, poems\, videos and other technologies as forms of knowledge with speci
 fic existential trajectories and attends to their historicity. His special
  area is Iran. He is looking for ways to pursue Giambattista Vico鈥檚 combin
 ation of anthropology and philology.\n
