Everything may die\, nothing may be regenerated”. Today\, we k now that regeneration of neurons and glia (non-neuronal cells) is performe d by adult neural stem cells that are located in two distinct niches in th e mammalian brain: the subgranular zone in the hippocampus and the subvent ricular zone (SVZ) lining the lateral ventricles. The latter represents th e largest pool of adult neural stem cells and is the focus of my independ ent research program. Specifically\, we study how the neural stem cell nic he\, which includes molecules secreted by neighbouring neurons (“neuroche micals”)\, regulates oligodendrocyte genesis by neural stem cells. Oligod endrocytes are the only cells in the brain that form myelin\, a fatty subs tance that insulates nerve axons and facilitates neuronal conduction. Dysf unction or loss of oligodendrocytes is the main driver of neurological imp airments in schizophrenia and autism\, as well as multiple sclerosis and A lzheimer’s disease. Oligodendrocyte regeneration is critical for brain he alth and function\, yet the mechanisms underpinning adult oligodendrocyte genesis have remained mysterious. I will present our published and ongoing studies on the mechanisms of oligodendrocyte genesis from neural stem cel ls.\n \n This seminar will take place in-person and online (details in attac hed poster) All are welcome!\n DTSTART:20231110T160000Z DTEND:20231110T170000Z LOCATION:1034\, McIntyre Medical Building\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3G 1Y6\, 3655 promenade Sir William Osler SUMMARY:Physiology Seminar\, Co -hosted by 鶹ɫƬ Regenerative Medicine : D r.
