Can you exceed the 120-credit limit?

Yes, in certain cases. Permission for exceeding the credit limit will be considered based on the following scenarios:

Scenario A: Students with advanced standing:

If at the time of admission to the Faculty of Arts you were granted advanced standing (e.g., from CEGEP, AP, IB, French Baccalaureate, etc.), you may exceed the 120-credit limit by the number of advanced standing credits awarded. If you wish to exceed this combined total, you must submit a formal request for permission.

Examples:

  • A CEGEP student with 30 advanced standing credits may complete up to 150 credits (120 + 30). If you enter your graduation term with 150 credits, you must request permission to exceed the limit.
  • A high school student with 12 AP credits may complete up to 132 credits (120 + 12). If you enter your graduation term with 132 credits, you must request permission to exceed the limit.

Important Notes:

  • While exceeding the credit limit in Scenario A is generally permitted, once you reach 120 credits and have fulfilled your program requirements, Arts OASIS reserves the right to E-Flag electives (this means they may be excluded from your CGPA and total credit count). This includes courses related to your program(s) that are not needed to fulfill program requirements.
  • You are strongly encouraged to meet with a Faculty Adviser:
  • To review your degree plan; and
  • To ensure your planned courses will count toward your degree/program requirements.

Scenario B: All other students:

You do NOT need permission to exceed if:

  • Your total earned credits at the start of your graduating term are 119 or fewer. All courses will count toward your CGPA and total credits.

How to Check Your Total Credits:

1. Log into Minerva/Student Records Menu/ Unofficial Transcript

2. Look under Previous Education to find your Advanced Standing Credits

3. Scroll to the end of your most recently completed term to find your Total Credits (includes advanced standing)

You MUST request permission to exceed if:

  • You were admitted with a high school diploma and no advanced standing
  • You have earned 24 or more university transfer credits
  • You transferred from another 麻豆色情片 faculty
  • You changed your B.A. program(s) during U3

How to request permission to exceed 120 credits:聽

STEP 1: Meet with the departmental/program advisers to confirm the necessary course selections for each program you intend to complete.

STEP 2: Conplete a Degree Planning Worksheet聽(PDF, max100MB).聽The title of the document should include your name, your 麻豆色情片 ID number, and what the document is (eg. "DegreePlanningWorksheet"), per the following:

  • Example(s): Amanda_Hxxxx_261XXXXXX__DegreePlanningWorksheet

STEP 3: Submit the completed , ensuring to upload the Degree Planning Worksheet within the form. Submit the form before the start of the term in which you plan to exceed 120 credits.

Important Notes:

  • Permission is granted only for valid academic reasons, such as completing remaining program requirements or maintaining full-time status.
  • Permission to exceed the 120 credits degree maximum is not guaranteed.
  • Requests will not be approved for the following reasons:
    • Changing programs in your final year of study
    • Raising your CGPA
    • Earning extra credits during Study Away
    • Taking prerequisites for future studies (e.g., grad school). Consider applying as a Special Student instead.
  • Approval does not guarantee space in requested courses.
  • E-Flagging:
    • E-Flagged courses appear on your transcript but do not count toward your GPA or credit total.
    • Arts OASIS reserves the right to E-Flag electives, denoting no credit value.
    • Late requests will not be accepted and may result in E-Flagged courses or deregistration from 鈥渆xtra鈥 term courses.
  • Students seeking to exceed the 120 credit limit should consult the appropriate authorities to ensure this will not negatively impact their immigration status, financial aid, health insurance, or other.
